What benefits can a tunnel greenhouse bring to agriculture?
In the Upper Midwest, where the growing season is naturally limited and climatic conditions are volatile, a tunnel greenhouse can be a useful tool in supplying local food markets, including farm to school. Growers can capitalize on market price peaks by using this technology to produce early- and late-season crops that are otherwise not available from other sources.
Increasing Temperature and Cold Protection
The most important benefit of a high tunnel is its ability to significantly increase daytime temperatures for cold hardy crops, like broccoli and cauliflower, during the late fall and early winter when they can be harvested. The modified climate inside the high tunnel also helps protect crops from weather-related damage, such as sun scald and wind bruises, and helps control pests.
Adaptability to Different Crops and Environments
The main advantage of a high tunnel is that it can be used for a variety of crops. They are typically used for vegetables, flowers and small fruits, but can also be used for growing trees.
Cost Effective and Easy to Build
The cost of a high tunnel is generally less than most traditional greenhouses. The initial investment in the structure can be a substantial expense, but it can be easily amortized through revenue generation throughout the season.
Energy Efficiency and Heat Management
The most efficient method for heating a high tunnel is through passive solar heat gain. During the day, the sun's rays heat the interior of the high tunnel and the soil. As the sun goes down, some of that heat is released by the soil, but if the tunnel is covered with row covers, the interior temperature can be maintained above freezing.
