【Hydroponic】Hydroponic culture systems such as the nutrient film technique (NFT) and deep flow techniques, also called soilless culture, are used for production of leafy vegetables and some fruit crops such as lettuce and spinach.
The complete control of nutrition and the recycling and recirculation of excess nutrients, which drains off, brings considerable benefits such as the reduced leaching of nutrient solutions into the environment and the reduction in water consumption.
Soilless culture has been developed over a long period of time in order to reduce the problems associated with the soil and thereby make greenhouse production more sustainable. This includes the elimination of soil-borne diseases, lowering the level of salt in the environment and enhancing nutrient availability, which is particularly important for crop diversity.
Plants grown in soilless cultures have a smaller root system and a smaller root zone volume, which requires more care for water supply and nutrient management compared to those grown in soil-based systems. This requires the use of special growing media that must be suitable for these conditions and provide adequate storage capacities of water and nutrients while maintaining good aeration.
Hydroponic cultivation is a relatively modern greenhouse cultivation technology, which has taken a leading role within the global cultivation landscape in recent years. The main driving forces are the development of suitable growing media with optimal physical and chemical properties, as well as advances in irrigation, fertilization and automation technologies.
