【Soilless substrate】Soilless substrate is the medium used to hold and support plants without soil. This is particularly the case for greenhouse production of ornamentals and vegetables, as well as outdoor container nursery production.
Soilless media are inorganic (sand, gravel, pebbles), organic (peat, rice hulls, sawdust), or synthetic (foam ship, sponges, moisture absorbent plastic fibre). There is a huge range of growing mediums on the market. The selection of a suitable growing medium is an important decision for any grower. Various factors are to be considered including cost, lifespan, pH level and a grower’s personal preference.A good growing medium should be lightweight, have good drainage, and provide sufficient oxygen to the plant roots. A grower should also look for a material that has good water holding capacity and air porosity to keep the nutrient solution from evaporating quickly.Ideally, the nutrient solution should contain the necessary minerals to meet the plant’s needs. The correct nutrient composition is crucial for successful plant growth and product quality in soilless culture.Water and nutrient management is another important issue in hydroponics, especially in the closed systems. The correct supply of water is essential to prevent salt accumulation in the root zone environment, as well as excessive ion lixiviation. The water supply is also regulated by the frequency of irrigation. Generally, the shower method of watering is used, which means that the plants are constantly being supplied with water as they need it. This is a great way to reduce stress on the plants.
