【Hydroponics】Hydroponics is an indoor gardening technique in which plants are grown without soil. The method saves labor and can be used in a variety of climates. It also avoids many of the pests and diseases found in soil-based gardening.
Growing Media
Hydroponic systems use a variety of growing media to deliver water and nutrients to plant roots. Some of these media are porous and retain the liquid nutrient solution, while others are solid. Most hydroponic growing media are pH-neutral, meaning that they will not upset the balance of the nutrient solution.
Reservoirs and Grow Trays
In most hydroponic systems, a reservoir is filled with liquid nutrient solutions and placed below a growing tray or growing substrate. String or wicks connect the reservoir to the root system, transporting the solution directly to the roots when needed.
Deep Water Culture (DWC)
A DWC system is a simple, easy-to-use hydroponic technique that requires an aeration bubbler and container. Using a reservoir that is at least 12 inches deep, the root system is submerged in aerated water so that the roots receive sufficient water, oxygen and nutrients.
Nutrient Film Technology (NFT)
A nutrient film technique uses a cyclical pump that delivers a liquid nutrient solution into the root zone. This system is a popular technique for leafy greens like lettuce and spinach, but it requires careful monitoring of the pump to ensure that it is working properly.
The most common hydroponic system, a drip system is an efficient way to feed plants and recycle the nutrient solution. Drip systems utilize a timer to turn on a pump that slowly feeds the plants on a cyclical schedule. Drip systems can be used to grow a wide variety of plants, and they support larger, more robust plant roots than other hydroponic systems.
